"The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men."
~Alice Walker

The Witness

Have you seen The Witness? It's one of the most compelling documentaries on animal rights we've ever seen.

It follows one man's stirring, yet totally natural metamorphosis from meat-eating "average Joe" to devoted advocate for animals, proving it's a journey anyone can take.

If you'd like a copy, click here to visit the Tribe of Heart website, where this film is for sale at a very modest price. If this journey is one you've already taken, consider getting the film as a way of explaining your views to friends and family, many of whom may not understand your position. It's a real eye-opener, and is truly "Must See TV".

"THE WITNESS is one man’s truth that cries out for mass exposure… may be the most important and persuasive film about animals ever made.”
~ Howard Rosenberg, Los Angeles Times

Freedom for Animals is an organization
devoted to education.

We believe that if people know about the ways that the human race harms the animals that share this planet with us, they'll stop eating meat, wearing fur and leather, using products tested on animals, and patronizing animal entertainment venues. We have faith that the human race can step out of the food chain and live with the same compassion we profess to extend to our fellow humans.

Further, we believe that showing compassion for animals is an important step toward our evolution as a species that is loving toward its own kind. Studies have repeatedly shown that people who purposely harm animals are more likely to purposely harm other humans. We believe the reverse is true, too -- people who wouldn't harm an animal are less likely to harm another person.

This website is devoted to helping people make better choices -- in terms of food, clothing, household products, entertainment, and in caring for their pets and the environment. We welcome your comments, your suggestions for more and better ways to share information, and your contributions in the form of recipes, links to animal-friendly products and organizations, and activist activities our visitors can share.

Did you know that:

  • Vegetarians can save up to 15% on their life insurance because a vegetarian diet results in a longer, healthier life.
  • Vegetarians and vegans (vegans eat no dairy or eggs, as well as not eating meat) have a significantly lower risk of heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.
  • 98% of the grain grown in the world is fed to the animals that are used to feed just 2% of the world's population. Think how many hungry people could be fed if we stopped raising pigs, cows, and chickens for food.
  • Every hamburger you buy costs the US economy approximately $100. The pollution from, food for, and cost of running factory farms is staggering.
  • Animals experience terror, worry, panic, and pain -- and with no verbal ability to express their emotions and physical sensations, these things are even more traumatic for them than they are for humans.
  • Rats giggle when tickled.
  • Pigs are smarter than dogs, and they love their babies. They experience intense emotional anguish when their babies are taken away. Piglets are torn from their mothers early -- so they can enter the chain of horror that is life for an animal raised to become food.
  • Chimps share 98% of our DNA. Even knowing this fact, organizations like the March of Dimes continue to torture them, using their similarity to humans against them in pointless, repetitive, horrendous medical experiments.

Despite the current attempts by those who profit from the abuse of animals -- pharmaceutical and household product companies, factory "farmers", big agricultural companies, etc... -- to portray them as such, animal rights activists are NOT crazy "tree-huggers" or eco-terrorists. We're people who see animals as important, valuable beings who deserve much better treatment than what we give them. No animal deserves to be tortured mentally, emotionally , or physically. No animal was put on this earth to serve us. No animal was put on this earth to test our toothpaste, hair spray, or medical procedures. It is human arrogance that puts animals on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, medical and product testing labs, in alleged "fashion", and in circuses, petting zoos, and aquariums.

Become a compassionate consumer and a compassionate human -- by eliminating animal products from your life. It's easier than you think. Click any of our links to find out about delicious (really, we swear!) vegetarian foods, animal friendly products and clothing, non-animal circuses, and ways to get involved that anyone can add to their already busy life.
